Jack Kerouac’s Hand-Drawn Cowl for On the Street (1952)

In 1950, when Jack Ker­ouac launched his first nov­el, The City and the Metropolis, he was lower than impressed by the guide cov­er professional­duced by his pub­lish­er, Har­courtroom Brace. (Click on right here to see why.) So, in 1952, when he started store­ping his sec­ond nov­el, the good beat clas­sic On the Street, Ker­ouac went forward and designed his personal cov­er. He despatched it to a poten­tial pub­lish­er A.A. Wyn, with a lit­tle be aware typed on the very prime:

I sub­mit this as my thought of an enchantment­ing com­mer­cial cov­er expres­sive of the guide. The cov­er for “The City and the Metropolis” was as uninteresting because the title and the pho­to again­flap. Wilbur Pippin’s pho­to of me is the per­fect On the Street one … it’ll appear to be the face of the fig­ure beneath.

Wyn turned down the nov­el, and it will­n’t get pub­lished till 1957. It could, how­ev­er, develop into a finest­vendor and be pub­lished with many dif­fer­ent cov­ers via the years. They’re all on dis­play right here.
